Summary:

  • We work to stimulate interest in socially driven enterprises, and the government has been very supportive of the social enterprises. Although the social enterprises in Malaysia are quite vibrant, there is no one organization holding them together.
  • The organization I work for works to create a dialogue about social enterprise and challenges mainstream ideas on development. We launched community-based activities to make people feel that they are part of a larger agenda. We also run a youth parliament and an NGO empowerment program in which NGOs ask for funds, and we evaluate the NGOs and support them.
  • The main problem we face is that we do not have the overall data to manage social enterprises. In some cases, recipients receive multiple funding while other deserving recipients are left out. Furthermore, urban-centric Social Enterprises have better access to funding while social enterprises located in rural areas are often left out. Moreover, there is a lack of policy for social enterprises.
