Main Activities of GSEF in 2017

 

I. Research and Training

 1) ILO SSE Academy in Korea (June 26~30, Seoul, Korea)  

  • Hosting the 8th ILO SSE Academy in Korea in order to enhance the capacities of Asian practitioners of SSE in public and civil sector.
  • Theme: Innovative Ecosystem for Innovative Ecosystem for SSE Public Policies: a contribution to the future of work
  • Organized by ILO International Training Center, Seoul Metropolitan Government and GSEF
  • Venue: Seoul City Hall, a University in Seoul, and other provinces of Korea(for field visit)
  • Participants: 215 central and local government officials, SSE practitioners, academics, etc. 

 

 2) UNRISD Research Project (year-round)

  • Research project proposed by the UNRISD(UN Research Institute for Social Development)  on Seoul’s Social Economy
  • Project Period: 2017.1~2018.6.(1 and 1/2 year)
  • Research Title: Social and Solidarity Economy for the SDGs: Spotlight on the Social Economy in Seoul
  1. The construction of the SSE policy in Seoul and the role of SSE actors in the policy making process
  2.  
  1. The interaction between national and local SE policies(the process of policy localization)
  2.  
  1. The interaction between SE initiatives and networks within the broader ‘eco-system.’
  2. Impact of policies, legislation and programs on SE and their contribution to the realization of the 2030 agenda

 

3) CITIES project on Social Finance

  • Research and knowledge transfer project on social finance between Quebec and Seoul
  • Project Period: 2017.5~2018.3.(10 months)
  • Research Title: Social Finance: Quebec’s best practices and their application to Seoul

 

4) Youth Camp for Social Innovation and Social Economy(Aug. 22~25, Korea)

  • International Gathering of youth who are practising or interested in the field of social innovation and social economy, which aims to develop a network of young activists and entrepreneurs for sharing their ideas and pursuing further collaboration in action.
  • Venue: Seoul and Gurye
  • Sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. GSEF is expected to join as a member of organizing a committee with other youth groups, civil society organizations from the sector of social innovation, youth movement and social entrepreneurship.
  • Format: Lectures and Workshops, Cultural Events, etc.
  • Participants: 100 young people participated from 25 countries (in the range of age 18~35)

 

II. Policy Dialogues

1) Asian Policy Dialogue (June 30~July 1, Seoul, Korea)

  •  

 

 

  • An annual project of GSEF since 2013 with the goal of strengthening policy capability on SSE of local government in Asia.
  • Policy makers and government officials shared their best practices and challenges they are facing in terms of building the enabling environment of SSE actors in the region.
  • Theme: ‘Effective public policy design for fostering social economy as leverage for inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic development in Asia’
  • From 16 countries, 60 people participated.

 

2) Europe Policy Dialogue (December 5, Archamps, France)

  • Policy makers and government officials shared their best practices and challenges they are facing concerning building the enabling environment of SSE actors in the region.
  • Delivering outcomes of the EPD discussions for constructing the theme of GSEF2018 Bilbao
  • Theme: ‘Transformative Partnerships between Local Governments and SSE actors’
  • From 13 cities and international organizations, 30 people participated.

 

III. International Meetings and Joint Projects

  1. UCLG Culture Summit (May 10~12, 2017, Jeju, Korea)
  • Presented a case of urban regeneration with SSE approach at the session on “Culture and Sustainable Development.”     

      b. Costa Rica Meeting (June 6, 2017, San Jose, Costa Rica)

  • Co-chair of GSEF, Rev. Kyong-yong Song, met Costa Rican President and First Lady and discussed further cooperation with GSEF.

      c. Metropolis World Congress (June 19~22, Montreal, Canada)

  • In cooperation with Montreal city, South African City Network, Barcelona, CITIES and UCLG, GSEF organized a training workshop on inclusive urban development.

      d. UN Office for Sustainable Development Asia Pacific Cities Summit (Sept. 10~13, Daejeon, Korea)

  • In cooperation with Montreal city, South African City Network, Barcelona, CITIES and UCLG, GSEF organized a training workshop on inclusive urban development.

      e. Local Economic Development Forum (October 16~20, Praia, Cabo Verde)

  • GSEF participated in the announcement of the Praia Manifesto with international networks including ESS Forum International, FMDV, INAISE, RIPESS, CitiHabitat, and RAESS.

      f. Signing MOU between RTES and Korea Association of Local Government on Social and Solidarity Economy

        (October 19~20, Niort, France)

  • GSEF is facilitated the MoU signing between two local government network for SSE, RTES in France and Korea Association of Local Governments on Social and Solidarity Economy, which promises further cooperation between the city networks to promote SSE in their region. 

      g. CityNet Congress- Joint Session with the Asia Foundation on Local Economic Development for Inclusive Cities

         (November 6~8, Colombo, Sri Lanka)

  • In cooperation with Asia Foundation, GSEF organized the parallel session on Local Economic Development for Inclusive Cities at the CityNet Congress in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Asian city representatives, including Suwon(Korea), Seberang Perai(Malaysia), and Jaffna(Sri Lanka) shared the policies of their city on SSE and participatory governance for inclusive economic development.

      h. Mont Blanc Meeting (December 6~8, Archamps, France)

  • GSEF participated as a panellist and a moderator for the plenary and thematic sessions of the 8th Mont Blanc Meeting organized by the International Forum on SSE
