Summit for a just energy transition

23 ~ 24 May, Montreal

Organized by the Institut du Nouveau Monde* in collaboration with unions and civil society organizations. Nearly 250 people gathered to attend panels, round tables and workshops aiming to build a common strategy for a just energy transition that benefits workers, civil society, the environment and the economy.

Faced with the importance of bringing about an ecological transition that takes into account social needs and aspirations, on May 23rd and 24th a Summit for a Just Energy Transition was held in Montréal. Bringing together representatives of the major labour unions of Quebec, financial actors, environmental groups, business owners, clean technology producers and representatives of civil society, its aim was to heighten awareness on the challenges and opportunities of effecting an ecological transition, in particular on the labour force, and to create a consensus on the necessity of just transition. Ultimately, the objective is to increase public and private action on this issue. The Chantier was present to restate the importance of involving local communities in the transition by granting them the control over the management of their resources and has committed to contribute to follow-up actions in this regard.
