Hyungsik EUM
Data Analyst, CICOPA (South Korea)
 
Hyungsik EUM began his career by going to Chuncheon, his hometown which he had left when he was very young. Since then until now, he has always had two profiles both in the field and in academic activity. On the one hand, as researcher, he studied civil society, social movement and social economy (Hallym University, 1999~2007). On the other hand, as activist, he worked in the field of social welfare and social economy, such as New Hope shelter for homeless people (1999~2000), Chuncheon Self-sufficiency Support Center (2000~2002), Social Enterprise Development Agency attached to Korea Association of Self-sufficiency Support Centers (2002~2004) and Chuncheon Labor Welfare Center (2004~2007).
During his works in Korea, his works were dedicated mainly to promotion of worker cooperative model (volunteer for international relationship in Korea Federation of Worker Cooperative, 2002~2007), introduction of European concepts of social enterprise and social economy (founding member of Social Enterprise Support Center), housing welfare social enterprise (founding member of Network of Self-sufficiency community in construction activity, actual Korea Association of Housing Welfare) and local social economy network (founding member of Chuncheon Employment Forum, actual Chuncheon Social Economy Network).
Since his move to Belgium, he studies political process of institutionalization of social enterprise in European countries as PhD candidate in Centre d’Economie Sociale with Professor Marc Jacquemain and Professor Jacques Defourny, University of Liege. He published several articles on social enterprises in South Korea, in some international academic journals and international conferences, mainly in collaboration with Professor Eric Bidet, University of Le Mans, in France. He is also individual member of EMES research network and works actively for relationship between EMES research network and researchers in East Asia. As professional career, since 2007, he works in CICOPA, sectoral organization of ICA, representing worker cooperatives, social cooperatives and artisans’ cooperative. In CICOPA, he is mainly in charge of statistics works and research projects. Also, he worked for developing ‘the World Standards for Social Cooperative’ and for international development issues.
