City of Dakar

Region:
Africa
Member since:
May 2019

The City of Dakar occupies 0.23% of the national territory and is densely populated. In fact, with a population of 1,216,738 inhabitants according to the National Agency of Statistics and Demography of Senegal (ANSD)’s 2015 estimates, more than 80% of economic and industrial activities take place in the capital of Senegal if we include its 19 communes. Today, the demographic and economic weight of SSE actors in Dakar constitutes a strong argument for taking them into account in the planning and decision-making processes at the local and national level.

The city of Dakar’s areas of intervention in the field of SSE are many and varied, including:

  • The training of project bearers in entrepreneurship
  • The setting-up of a credit fund
  • The support for economic inclusion strategies
  • Facilitating access to credit for SSE actors
  • Supporting women to allow for better management of their activities
  • Increase of their income level.

The City of Dakar is a member of the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF), the organization United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) and the Network of Locally Elected Women and Territorial Leaders of Africa (REFELA).
